Let There Be Light

By Marilyn Jenett

Hanukkah

If you have known me for awhile, you may be aware that I am Jewish by birth. However, I’ve never practiced Judaism or been involved in the culture or traditions. I do have vague childhood memories of the holidays and respect for what I know to be a beautiful heritage.

Traveling as an adult, I once stood on the top of Masada in Isreal, the isolated large mesa overlooking the Dead Sea — the famous ancient fortress where a tribe of Jews hid from the soldiers of the Roman Empire for two years. As the soldiers reached the top of the mountain, the Jews chose mass suicide rather than surrender. Seeing the historical ruins at the top of this high plateau had a great impact on me. So did the military tanks in the Golan Heights as we picked up 16-year old soldiers hitching rides on our tour bus. What a difference it made to witness all of this in person instead of viewing it on TV from the comfort of our living rooms in America.

It was a poignant scene when I stood on the spot where Christ was born in Bethlehem, which is believed to be in a grotto in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Nativity. They didn’t allow photos to be taken inside, but the guard liked us and allowed me to take a few.

Stories of the Holocaust always bring tears. Not because I’m Jewish. Because I’m human.

But in spite of the profound effect these experiences had on me, I continued, as always, to follow an independent spiritual path instead of a religious one. And if you have experienced my writings for awhile, you know that one of my favorite things is to find the metaphysical meaning in every holiday and discover its alignment to prosperity consciousness — a core message that will apply to all people of every faith.

Today I am addressing Hanukkah, celebrated for 8 days. I truly believe that the teachings below can have a profound effect on your consciousness and change your life…

Hanukkah, or Chanukah, known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Syrian Greeks in 164 BCE after years of being massacred and persecuted. Hanukkah is from the Hebrew word for “dedication.” The Holy Temple in Jerusalem was desecrated in the battle and following the revolt, there was only enough olive oil left to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for just one day. But miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, just enough time to press and prepare fresh oil.

This miracle is celebrated during Hanukkah by lighting a special nine-branched candelabrum called a menorah for eight days. Each night of the holiday, the “servant” light, called a shamash, lights one additional candle until all eight are lit by the final night.

Universal Spiritual Meaning for All of Us

So…I must now find the Universal spiritual meaning to this holiday and its ritual and intuit its relationship to our growing prosperity consciousness…

For the Jews, Hanukkah signified going from darkness into light and was a victory of freedom over opposition.

I found an essay by David Robert Ord, Editorial Director of Namaste Publishing, a publisher of spiritual and transformational books. Ord’s expression of the deeper meaning of Hanukkah resonated with me as a perfect introduction to my own intuited interpretation.

Ord states, in part:

“What happened at that time among the people we have come to know as the Jews was an advance beyond fear of the capriciousness of the gods. It was the beginning of the freeing of humans from the whims of powers beyond our control

“…The Jews had the audacity to imagine they had a right to determine their own destiny. It is a belief that led ultimately to our modern democratic approach in the west.

“Hanukkah represents the right to self-determination. In the dark night of oppression, a lamp glows, illumining the path to freedom that all humanity will someday tread.

“When you realize that your life is in your own hands — that nobody is pulling the strings — you become open to creative resources within you that, until now, you may have been oblivious of.”

I’ve now come up with an idea for us to apply Hanukkah’s message for our own personal transformation, prosperity and business success. The Festival of Lights provides a simple reminder of the attributes of consciousness that should always remain foremost in our minds and hearts. From these attributes will flow everything that is needed to make us happy and our lives complete…

Let There Be LIGHT

L is for LOVE, the most powerful force in the Universe and the seed of creation. We learn to love our Universal Parent, love ourselves, love mankind, love our work and discover the work we love, and even love money, for we know it is pure spiritual substance. You have as much right to receive it as the air you breathe.

I is for ILLUMINATION, the wisdom and knowledge that directs us on our path to our destined place in life and our highest good. As you become illumined, you also illumine others and contribute to the healing of the world.

G is for GRATITUDE, a powerful principle of manifestation and the umbilical cord that connects us to our Universal Parent. You are grateful not only for the blessings you have but also for those things you desire but don’t yet see, for you know that expressing gratitude before you receive is the strongest magnet that draws those things to you.

H is for HERITAGE, our birthright, the inheritance that belongs to each one of us by divine right. You are the rich heir of a wealthy Universe and your job is to learn to accept and receive what is rightfully yours and to eliminate the dominant thought of struggle and strain.

T is for TRUTH and for TRUST. You are here to discover the truth of who and what you really are. The greatest achievement you can aspire to in life, the foundation for every other achievement, is to become aligned with your true Source and to experience unconditional trust in its guidance and wisdom.

During this week of Hanukkah and continuing into the future, do you think it might be a good idea to begin each day with our own ritual of affirming, “Let there be Light?”
