How Do You Know When Your Business is “Real”?

Someone once asked me: I’m starting a new business. How will I know when my business is “real”?

I don’t believe that you need anyone else in the world or any outside circumstance to let you know when your business is real.

A 10-year old with a lemonade stand accepting a quarter from a customer feels his business is real.

A retailer who opens her door the first day and hangs that first dollar on a frame on the wall feels her business is real.

When I was asked to find a location for my first special event client and made a whole $250 from that booking, I felt my business was real. It didn’t feel any more real some time later when my profit was $25,000 for an event. The real feeling just showed up in a larger container, that’s all.  And by the way, the real feeling from that first booking that earned me $250 had nothing to do with the client — a 25-year old charismatic speaker I had never heard of whose staff invited me to participate in a firewalk, which I had also never heard of. My sensitive feet graciously declined. (But did you guess who that young speaker was who became a cultural icon?)

But the truth of the matter is that my business was “real” from the moment I conceived the idea of a location company for special events. Customers did not have to be there at the moment. Dollars did not have to pass hands. An idea stamped into Universal Mind that “felt” real made it real for me even before there were transactions. I knew that I knew.

When I was composing the lessons for Feel Free to Prosper, I had never mentored, coached, taught or otherwise shared my prosperity knowledge. And yet as soon as those words appeared on a page, I knew this business was real. In fact, it was more real than anything I had ever experienced in my life. My first sale of a lesson for $30 felt more real than the previous $25,000 I had made for a corporate event.

The point I am making here is that in my opinion the reality of our business has nothing to do with outer circumstances. The outer circumstances are an aftermath, a residual effect of our inner circumstance. And the inner circumstance is based on our thoughts and feelings. Every idea, business, invention, victory, has first become “real” in mind before it became an outer reality. Athletes and Olympians understand this and it’s likely that at some point in your life, you’ve had an inkling of this.

No one else can have our thoughts and feelings. They are ours exclusively. And they are as real as we want them to be.

Do you know that the subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between a “real” and an imagined act? And what the subconscious mind accepts in imagination as real becomes real in the outer world. So our success is never based on someone else’s standard or guideline or on outer happenings. Those happenings are merely the mirror reflecting back to us.

Our success — the real-ness — is based on our own inner “reality” blueprint. And we don’t have to wait for anything. We can make our choice in an instant.

A deal signed by Donald Trump for a million dollars is no more real to the deal maker than that glass of lemonade sold for a quarter is to its deal maker. It’s all perception, isn’t it?
