The World Is Your Oyster

By Marilyn Jenett

You are probably familiar with the common expression, “The world is your oyster.” But what does this phrase really mean?

Most references reveal that the quote is derived from Shakespeare’s play, The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Falstaff: I will not lend thee a penny.

Pistol: Why, then, the world’s mine oyster, Which I with sword will open.

— Act II, Scene II.

What did Pistol mean? And more importantly, what does this idiomatic phrase mean to us — and how does it reveal a missing link to prosperity?

Oysters are shellfish that produce pearls, objects of great value. Once you have the oyster, it gives up the pearl without much of a fight. Getting the pearl requires the oyster to be opened. But despite the hardness of the oyster shell, they can be opened with ease — if you know the trick. Oyster shells are held closed by a single muscle called the adductor. So the trick is to cut the muscle which holds the ‘door’ shut. Once the adductor is cut, the shell falls open.

  • If the world is your oyster, then it is a place where you can get something of great value with ease.
  • The world is the place from which one can extract success and profit, as a pearl can be extracted from an oyster.
  • “The world is your oyster” means that you have the ability to achieve anything you want in life.

Ah, but we must understand the “trick” that allows us to open the door to success with ease.

The adductor muscle in the oyster may be likened to a restrictive dominant thought in our subconscious mind that holds the door shut to our ability to manifest what we want in life.

The trick, then, is for us to create a new dominant thought in our mind that will cut the muscle of resistance that holds us back.

Feel Free to Prosper teachings are known for gently creating that shift to a new dominant thought. And that’s the missing link that cuts the cord from our negative past and allows us to prosper with ease.
